How the legendary village lives after the occupation
Chornobayivka is a folk legend and a symbol of the self-destruction of the Russian army. The village is located a few kilometers from Kherson. On February 24, its residents woke up to numerous explosions - the Russian military began shelling infrastructure facilities. They attacked the Kherson International Airport, after which they occupied the military airfield. The occupants planned to equip a bridgehead for an attack on Mykolaiv and Odesa. But the Ukrainian army destroyed the enemy again and again.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Chornobayivka has become "a symbol of the incompetence of the Russian command." Poems and songs were written about Chornobayivka. The name of the village became a meme of the Russian-Ukrainian war. On November 11, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the village from Russian troops. However, since that time, the shelling of Chornobayivka by the Russian army has not stopped. Thus, at the beginning of March, a 1-year-old child was injured due to powerful artillery shelling of the village.
Now the international airport is a huge mined cemetery of burnt equipment. The occupiers got here as if in the Bermuda Triangle. Hundreds of new soldiers were sent to replace the dead. Now the entire territory of the airport is in the trenches. Traces of Russian soldiers' presence are everywhere: abandoned ammunition, uniforms, and piles of trash. The Russians, retreating, took away everything that survived. All equipment was secured from the control room. Destroyed buildings and runways can be restored - the main thing is that the Ukrainian flag is flying again on the observation tower. But the lives of the residents of Chornobayivka killed by the occupiers will not be returned. During the occupation, almost 40 civilians died in Chornobayivka, and another 40 were wounded. People remember with horror the atrocities of the Russian invaders.
Before the full-scale war, the village prospered: a modern stadium, gyms, a newly renovated school. Now - broken, looted houses, empty streets. Of the 11 thousand people in Chernobaevka, no more than 3 thousand people remained, because of the constant shelling, people are in no hurry to return. More than 300 houses in the village were destroyed, much more damaged. After 9 long months of occupation, Chernobaevka waited for liberation. The Russian army continues to shell, but the locals believe that everything will be restored and soon the famous village will become prosperous again.
