The capture of Soledar by the russians will not mean the encirclement of Bakhmut

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War believe that the capture of Soledar by the russians will not mean that the city of Bakhmut will be surrounded.

The institute noted that russian troops had not captured all of Soledar, despite several false claims that the city had fallen and that Bakhmut was in danger of imminent encirclement.

"Several russian sources claimed that Wagner PMC forces advanced west from Soledar on January 10. But Yevgeny Prigozhin denied these claims, noting that the Wagnerites were still fighting against coordinated Ukrainian resistance," the institute's daily report says.

As of January 10, ISW analysts noted, there is only visual confirmation of the presence of Wagner forces in the center of Soledar. "However, the reality of control over the territory in Soledar from block to block is not clear due to the dynamic nature of urban fighting," analysts said.

"Even if the Russian claims are accepted as true, the capture of Soledar would not mean an immediate encirclement of Bakhmut. Control of Soledar would not necessarily allow Russian forces to take control of critical Ukrainian landlines of communications to Bakhmut," the ISW concluded.

On January 9, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the Armed Forces in Soledar, Donetsk region, had won additional time and additional forces for Ukraine.

The situation is certainly difficult. The Ukrainian defenders hold the line, but the Russian soldiers, like zombies, keep coming and coming.
