The bombardment of the Azovstal plant could damage a technical structure that holds tens of thousands of tons of a toxic chemical liquid - a concentrated solution of hydrogen sulfide. Its leakage will completely kill the flora and fauna of the Sea of Azov, according to the mayor of Mariupol Vadim Boychenko.
Further, hazardous substances can enter the Black and Mediterranean Seas.
Also, the mayor of Mariupol, Vadim Boychenko, reports that now international experts and the UN need immediate access to the facility to study the situation and prevent a world-class environmental catastrophe.
There is no doubt that the Russians could allow such a catastrophe. Over the past few years, environmental disasters have constantly occurred in Russia itself, for which almost no one was responsible, for example:
- oil spills in Yugra, 2019;
- forest fires in Siberia, 2019;
- disaster in Norilsk, 2020;
- pollution of the Pacific Ocean near Kamchatka with toxic substances (presumably oil products) in 2021;
- oil spill near Novorossiysk and many other incidents...
Already, local residents report that they often see dead dolphins on the coast of the Sea of Azov. The exact cause of their death is not known, but harmful chemicals in the water could also be the cause.
Another environmental problem with very serious consequences was the numerous forest fires in the Kherson region. Forests are burning there, the fire appears as a result of shelling with rockets and other weapons.
Back in early May, the head of the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine, Yuriy Bolohovets, reported that fires were recorded on more than 800 hectares of forest in the occupied territory of the Kherson region. Due to the actions of the invaders, dry and windy weather, the timely localization of fires became more complicated, because the Russians do not let forest guards into the fires. Thus, the fire destroys entire ecosystems of Ukrainian forests, which will be difficult to restore.
War brings not only destruction and huge human losses, but also irreparable harm to the environment on our planet. It is terrible to imagine that this horror began because of one person. His name is Vladimir Putin. By his actions, he threw problems to all of humanity for decades to come. It must be stopped immediately.
